Les logiciels SIG sont en particulier caractérisés par leur capacité à associer les données graphiques (représentant l’espace géographique) et les données thématiques (représentant les caractéristiques des objets géographiques): en sélectionnant un ou plusieurs objets géographiques, on pourra obtenir du SIG un inventaire des données thématiques correspondantes (liste des habitants d’un bâtiment par exemple); réciproquement, en spécificant le nom d’une personne, on pourra obtenir du SIG une carte thématique des bâtiments dont elle est propriétaire.
