Summary
An increasing need for a 3D GIS is observed in many areas in the last several years that challenges researchers and vendors to find a solution for maintenance and analysis of 3D data. Advances in the field of software and hardware development warranty the “luxury” to operate with the third dimension. Based on some recent software achievements, the paper presents a client-server approach for a 3D GIS. The approach permits query and analysis of spatial and semantic information by remote users across the Web. The data are hosted in a DBMS according to a specially designed conceptual schema, which allows storage of geometry, attributes, spatial relationships and behaviour of object. The approach is based on established Web mechanisms to control the access to the database and create documents on the fly. The new aspect is the elaborated employment of VRML for visualisation, query and exploration of 3D data. A GUI on the client site provides the users with means (fill-out forms) to specify SQL queries and visualise 3D outcomes in virtual reality environment. A prototype system and a number of examples validate the proposed concepts.

Real-Time Mobile GIS Prototype: Design, Architecture, and Usability Study
Abgelegt unter: Forschung, Gis Anwendungen | RSS 2.0 | TB | Tags: Mobile GIS, Real-Time | Keine Kommentare
Summary
In the past, mobile communication devices (such as cell phones) have not been utilized in flood forecasting and warning due to limitations in technology that have limited the ability of forecasters to gather and interpret geographical data in near real-time. This paper presents a prototype that integrates a GIS (geographic information system) with a hydrological model. It is a mobile mapping application for J2ME-enabled mobile communication devices that allows those in the flood forecasting, prevention, and related fields to execute programs and run mapping functions from a server using their mobile device. The proposed client-server network application uses mobile devices to connect to a server via the Internet. This study also evaluates the usability of the system using an in-lab tests.

Project Backgrround:
The analysis of the City of Roanoke’s urban tree canopy (UTC) was carried out by the Virginia Department of Forestry in collaboration with the City of Roanoke and the Roanoke Valley— Alleghany Regional Commission. Assistance was provided by the Virginia Geospatial Extension Program (VGEP) at Virginia Tech’s Department of Forestry and by the Spatial Analysis Laboratory (SAL) of the University of Vermont. The goal of the project was to apply the USDA Forest Service’s UTC assessment protocols to the City of Roanoke. This analysis was conducted based on year 2008 data.

A GIS model for determination of water resources suitability for goats grazing
Abgelegt unter: Gis Anwendungen | RSS 2.0 | TB | Tags: Agriculture, GIS, water resources | Keine Kommentare
Proper use from water resources, especially in arid and semi arid of Iranian rangeland are very important. In this area water is one of a valuable ecosystem component. The study was conducted in Ghareh Aghach watershed region is located, Isfahan province, in central part of Iran. Four criteria’s of water quality, water quantity, water distance and livestock information were integrated to water resources suitability for goats grazing. According to the results, water distance and accessibility to water is a most declining factor for suitability. A quality and quantity factor is a no limiting factor in part of study area. The results show that from 7158.69 ha of studied rangelands, 6245.93 ha (87.25%) classified as S1 class (with no limitation), 810.58 ha (11.32%) classified as S2 class (with low limitation), and 102.3 ha (1.43%) classified as N class (non suitable). Based up on slope classes, areas that far from water point more than 75% of slope is not suitable and less than 15% are very suitable. Good distribution of water resources increases water suitability and cause better and monotonous utilization of rangeland.

The HIVmapper is an interactive GIS mapping tool which allows users to quickly create maps based on MEASURE DHS data found in the HIV/AIDS Survey Indicators Database.
Use maps to tell stories and explain trends. For example, maps can help to describe the HIV situation in Tanzania. Below are four maps that describe HIV prevalence in Tanzania and in the region. Click on thumbnail images to see maps in HIVmapper.
